In less than a year after the government liberalized the drone policy last August, the agricultural sector has become the biggest user of these multi-utility flying robots. These are used in agriculture for a variety of purposes, such as estimating planted area and likely production, assessing crop damage from pests and diseases, and digitizing land records, in apart from their most common use for spraying pesticides and plant nutrients. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the use of drones in agriculture, forestry and other purposes in the rural sector have been notified by the Ministry of Agriculture to support security and other aspects.
