Singer and farmer Brendan Shine raises up to 100 cattle

BRENDAN Shine cuts and packs his own silage.

The Roscommon native has had more Irish chart hits than the Beatles (30 to 27), as Tom Gilmore told us in these pages a few weeks ago, and it’s probably a pretty safe bet to say what to do navigating a tractor around a field of freshly cut grass in the height of summer is a claim to fame that Paul McCartney does not have.

Brendan lives with his wife Kathleen in Taughmaconnell, nestled between Ballinasloe and Athlone, in an area covered by the Padraig Pearses GAA club. The Moore townlands and the Creagh countryside also supply players to the club.

Kathleen used to cut silage with her husband until a few years ago, and Brendan, 75 in June, does all his own farming while still very active in the country and western music scene.

Brendan has been back to organically raising a herd of beef cattle lately…
