Orrum Receives NTCA Smart Rural Community Designation — The Rural Broadband Association

June 8—SHALLOTTE — FOCUS Broadband recently awarded the town of Orrum Smart Rural Community designation along with a sign to proudly display the title in the town.

The Smart Rural Community designation, awarded by the NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association, highlights member projects that make rural communities vibrant places to live and do business through the implementation of innovative broadband solutions. Orrum is the first town in Robeson County to receive this recognition.

The Town of Orrum received this recognition due to the work done by FOCUS Broadband to install a new state-of-the-art fiber optic network that will serve residents and businesses in the town.

The project was made possible by a $2.5 million NC GREAT grant as well as an additional $1 million investment from FOCUS Broadband which allows the company to serve more than 2,000 addresses in cities. Robeson County of Orrum and Proctorville and the Columbus County town of Boardman.

In addition to funding from the NC GREAT grant, FOCUS Broadband also received a $2.9 million Community Connect grant from the United States Department of Agriculture that will enable the company to serve 1,200 addresses in communities. of Robeson County from Howellsville, Tolarsville and areas outside of the City of St. Paul.
