Peripheral hamlet lit by solar energy; Boosting the rural economy

After being in darkness for the past 80 years, an outlying tribal hamlet of Sarkhipara in Khowai district of Tripura has undergone a drastic transformation and is now lit by solar energy. Children now study under electric lights, while men make traditional handicrafts from bamboo and women weave tribal outfits in the cool breeze from ceiling fans.

As the roads from the village to the market are now lit, the “Haats” (village markets) are now open even after dusk, making it easier for locals to walk the distance.

According to one of the growers – Kalaha Reang, “It’s like a dream come true. Previously, the only sources of light after dusk were kerosene lamps and battery-powered flashlights. At night, the colony seemed like a haunted place. Kids can now study after dark, and we can watch TV and charge our smartphones. Life has changed for us.

A senior official noted that in September 2021, a micro power plant of 2 KW each was installed in Sarkhipara and 11 other remote hamlets of Tripura with the aim of supplying electricity to the villages.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the project in a virtual program on July 30.

“Now we can do handicrafts even at night and the women weave Risa and Pachhra. We can also meet in the evening under the electric light and watch TV,” said Jetanjoy Reang who lives in the nearby village of Nonachera. under the Mungiyakami block.

The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has installed 2930 solar street lights in 239 markets across 12 blocks in the state.

“We aim to install 15,000 solar street lights in 58 rural blocks, which should be completed by December 2022”, – informed the head of TREDA.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura – Jishnu Dev Varma remarked “Due to the rugged terrain of the state, many isolated hamlets have either sporadic electricity connectivity or none at all. Off-grid solar microgrids are the only practical way to power them. »
