Over the past year, the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) has run a series of over 170 TDF training events at TDFs across Northern Ireland in the dairy, beef, sheep , agricultural, environmental and pork with excellent feedback and Le CAFRE continues to take bookings for future visits to all of its TDF farms.
Three new TDF Laitiers were recently named under the Feed Efficiency theme, bringing the total number of TDF named to 42.
One of Dairy TDF’s newest producers is Kevin McGrade of Co Tyrone who with his family milks just over 250 cows on heavy land near Dromore with a target yield of 7000 litres. [4.8% BF and 3.70% P] on 1.8 tonnes of concentrates. Cows are put out to grass when conditions allow from February 1 each year and calving begins September 1.
Kevin said: “I have always been keen to try to maximize grass and forage production and we have made great strides in this area over the past few years as well as increasing cow numbers significantly. I always enjoy chatting with other farmers and really look forward to welcoming groups of farmers to our farm.
Details of all TDFs and how to book a visit can be found on the CAFRE website: www.cafre.ac.uk/industry-support/technology-demonstration-farms/
